LANAP FAQs in Winter Park, FL

Here are some frequently asked questions we receive about laser gum treatment with the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP®):

Am I a good candidate for laser gum surgery?

If you have pockets that are 5mm or deeper, laser gum treatment may be your best option for killing bacteria and restoring your mouth to a healthier state. If you are noticing some of the early signs of gum disease, such as bad breath, bleeding gums, or loose teeth, you may be a good candidate for LANAP®. We can determine candidacy during your periodontal exam.

Why do you use LANAP®?

Dr. Rodney Horvat, and Dr. Scott Cohen and the team at Periodontics & Implant Dentistry are certified to use the PerioLase® MVP-7™ for the treatment of gum disease. We use LANAP® instead of because of the predictable outcomes and patient comfort. LANAP® supports fast healing times and the laser can stimulate bone tissue regeneration.

Does laser gum surgery hurt?

Almost all of our patients report little to no discomfort during and after their procedure. LANAP® is a minimally-invasive procedure and delivers predictable results with minimal pain and discomfort to the patient.

How many treatments will I need?

We typically perform LANAP® in one visit and will pass the laser over the treatment area two times. Your doctor can discuss what to expect from your procedure during your consultation.

Is there any bleeding or stitches involved?

Unlike traditional gum surgery, laser gum treatment results in little to no bleeding and does not require sutures. Since we do not use a scalpel to cut away gum tissue, you will heal very quickly and the gum tissues will not bleed excessively.

Will I need to take time off work to recover?

Most patients can return to regular activities right after their visit! However, you may want to take the rest of the day off to rest and relax. Any minimal pain or discomfort you might experience after your treatment can be easily controlled with pain medication.
