Implants Promote Overall Jaw Health

Implants Help Preserve Bone in the Jaw

Traditional procedures pose risks of complications, whereas implants promote overall oral and jaw health. The presence of natural teeth or implants helps to preserve the jaw bone. An extracted or lost tooth can cause the bone to weaken or erode. Once placed, successful implants provide stability and work to maintain jaw health just as natural teeth do.

Treating Missing Teeth with the Dental Implants Procedure

If you have missing teeth and are wondering what your treatment options are, talk to Dr. Rodney Horvat, and Dr. Scott Cohen at Periodontics & Implant Dentistry about the dental implants procedure. Understanding how dental implants work and what types of benefits you can enjoy by undergoing treatment can help you make the most informed decisions about your oral health.

About the Dental Implants Procedure

A dental implant is made of three pieces: the titanium implant, the abutment, and the crown. When you have missing teeth or a missing tooth, you will have an implant surgically placed directly into the jaw bone. This ensures a secure connection between the implant and the jaw bone, and this connection is very similar to that of a natural tooth and jaw. Next, the abutment is fitted over the part of the implant exposed above the gum line. Finally, the crown is placed over the abutment. The crown is the piece that looks and functions just like a natural tooth and is designed to completely cover the silver abutment.

Patients who are only missing a single tooth often choose a fixed bridge instead of a dental implants procedure for tooth replacement. However, bridges are not without their complications, and we have found that bridges often damage natural teeth that would otherwise have stayed healthy. In addition, bridges typically have to be replaced once or twice over the course of a patient’s lifetime. We have found that similar complications exist with partial dentures and that both treatments have a 30 percent failure rate. Given these complications and success rates, it often makes sense to undergo the dental implants procedure for missing teeth.

With dental implants, the jaw bone can be preserved and there is no risk of losing other healthy teeth surrounding the lost tooth site. When placed successfully, implants provide stability for the mouth and jaw, and will work to preserve jaw health just like natural teeth.

The dental implants procedure is backed by more than 50 years of science and research and is an attractive long-term option for treating missing teeth.
