Basic Steps of the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP®) :Laser Treatment on Gums
A) Measuring the pockets. The first step of this type of laser treatment on gums is to measure the depth of the pockets around the gums. The doctor will measure the pockets using a probe, and this tells us how much loss of attachment has occurred.
B) Bacteria removal with the laser. Pulsed laser light is administered to the gum tissue and will remove the diseased tissue from the pocket. It will also kill the bacteria that causes gum disease. This laser light is not absorbed in water, healthy tissue, root, or bone. This makes the surgery a minimally-invasive procedure and is much more comfortable than traditional gum surgery.
C) Calculus removal. Calculus is removed from the root surface of the teeth using tiny ultrasonic scalers. This ensures all calculus that might have formed underneath the gum line is removed. The laser cannot remove calculus by itself, but will denature the calculus deposits for easier removal with the ultrasonic tool.
D) Clot formation. The laser is passed over the area a second time at the bottom of the pocket to stimulate the soft tissue, root, and bone. This creates a natural blood clot and forms a seal around the teeth. Now we have a clean and stable environment for healing.
E) Tissue compression. The soft tissue is recompressed against the root surface of the teeth. No sutures are required, and this is also a very tolerable process.
F) Bite adjustment. The doctor will adjust the bite to make sure there is not any significant trauma to any of the teeth, especially those that have bone loss. This ensures a much better outcome.
